Production in Bilfinger Mars Offshore began in November. The first elements – substation platforms for a wind farm owned by Dong Energy AS – are set to be hoisted by the gantry in June 2016.

“The gantry will be indispensable for putting up finished elements and loading them onto barges which will then carry the foundations to the client”, informs Bogna Bartkiewicz, Public Relations specialist at Bilfinger Mars Offshore. Elements weighing up to 1400 tonnes will be hoisted to a height of 100 metres as compared to the gantry cranes in the Szczecin Shipyard which can lift a maximum weight of 450 tonnes to a height of 80 metres.

“The crane will be equipped with specialist electronic systems such as an overload protection system, wind indicator, active systems (informing the operator whether the crane is moving or not), as well as breakdown indicators”, adds Bogna Bartkiewicz.

The installation of the gantry crane on the Ostrów Brdowski Island began at the end of October. The works should be completed in January 2016. In February, movement and hoist trials will begin and they will be followed by acceptance tests. “We hope to get a permit to use the crane in March”, said Bogna Bartkiewicz.

The new 120-metre gantry crane is now the tallest structure in Szczecin and the tallest structure of this type in Europe. Bilfinger Mars Offshore also has equipment that is unique on the European scale. The most important devices installed in the company’s production plant include a digital welding robot and machines for automated orbital welding. The construction of the plant cost over PLN 500 million.
