Revival of a paper mill in Skolwin

The newly opened paper mill owned by Apis is set to manufacture 4,000 tonnes of paper in the first month of its activity. In two months, the volume is expected to double.

The paper mill makes paper for cardboard manufacture which is transported in rolls to Alpis’ plant in Chojnów and to the global Swedish-based company Eckman. There the paper is used in the manufacturing of cardboard for the packaging industry.

“We shall be manufacturing almost 300 tonnes of paper a day which is about 8,000 tonnes a month. Our minimum annual sales target is PLN 120 million”, informs Piotr Bloch, Apis’ Chairman. “There is a lot of demand for cardboard, even a bit of a shortage of it in Europe lately”, he adds.

New paper is made of recycled waste paper. Three out of the eight thousand tonnes of old waste paper that we need will be sourced in our region.

Apis’ new paper mill will provide almost 90 new jobs, mainly to former employees of the Skolwin paper mill. “Only a handful of vacancies are left. I am still looking for a good programmer and an electrician”, says Piotr Bloch. The company will partner with the West Pomeranian University of Technology offering students internships in the paper mill.

The old paper manufacture in ul. Stołczyńska has undergone a complete overhaul. Apis spent nearly PLN 60 m on refurbishment of almost 20,000 sq. metres of shop floor and modernization of production lines, including an old paper machine.  A sum of PLN 4.5 m came from a loan under the Jessica EU funding programme.

According to the original plan, the paper mill was set to start operating in December, after manufacturing was discontinued in the old Skolwin Paper Mill. “Unfortunately, it turned out the control equipment was faulty and had to be replaced”, Piotr Bloch explains the delay.

The company bought the real property from a receiver in 2014.

Apis has a five percent market share in Poland. Henryk Fijałkowski and Piotr Bloch established Apis Sp. z o.o. in 2002, at a location next to Przedsiębiorstwo Wielobranżowe Apis Sp. J (manufacturer of toilet paper and paper towels) which had been operating since 1996. The registered offices of both companies are located in Chodecz near Włocławek. Apis has manufacturing plants in Chojnów, Nowa Bystrzyca (manufacturing paper for 15 years), Włocławek and Legnica.
