The construction started this year, in March. We can already see two rooms. The smaller one will house a sorting plant for recyclable materials; the bigger one – installation for the production of alternative fuel. The first facility will be equipped with a special processing line for manual segregation of collected plastic materials, paper, cardboard, textile and tin. Resulting recyclable materials will be pressed into blocks weighing several hundred kilograms and transported to plants making further use of them.

In the second building mixed municipal solid waste will be used to generate material with greater energy value which as the so-called alternative fuel will go to an incinerator plant in Szczecin. “We obtain alternative fuel by separating materials with high heating value which after machining may be used in various furnaces,” says President of Remondis Szczecin Ronald Laska.
The building site will also contain an office building, sanitary facilities, cloakrooms, warehouses, car garages and control room for processing devices.

The project is carried out by Calbud and its cost will total approx. PLN 70 million. Remondis wants to cover part of the costs with a subsidised loan from the District Fund for Environmental Protection. The company will move to the new location in the middle of next year. The project was necessary as the lease of the site at Żołnierska Street, which is the present seat of the company, expires next year.

The project worries local residents who simply fear the bad smell after the sorting plant will have been opened. They expressed their concerns on the local radio. “Our plant will have no negative impact on the surroundings," assures the President of Szczecin’s Remondis. “It will not cause any nuisance. We have been granted all necessary permits and positive opinions concerning the environment. Additionally, for half a year after the start of the facility emissions will be measured and this will confirm all we have said.
