Start! Fish straight from the Szczecin Lagoon
… is sold by Gold Fish, a fish store opened three weeks ago by Natasza Cimochowska on the route from Szczecin to Lubieszyn.
The store located at Malwowa 3 in Dołuje has glass displays with fresh and smoked fish, most of which come from the Szczecin Lagoon.
We sell mainly zander and perch but also European catfish and sea trout. One can also buy burbot, roach and bream, lists the owner, who used to work at the marketing department of a sweet manufacturer.
Additionally, the offering includes smoked eel and fish from the Baltic Sea, bough directly from fishermen. Natasza Cimochowska states that none of the said fish has been frozen before or comes from a fish farm. Rainbow trout is the only fish that comes from a farm. I also sell several frozen deep-sea species, as we always have clients used to buying such fish, she explains.
The store also sells canned fish – Szczecin Lagoon fish in vinegar, homemade fish paste with red peppers, fish cutlets and salads. We have already seen first clients returning to buy Greek-style fish made using our own recipe.
Mediterranean cuisine lovers may buy Spanish-style tuna salad, stuffed olives, sun-dried tomatoes and Portuguese sardines in addition to natural spices, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
The idea to sell fish was nothing new to Natasza Cimochowska, who comes from Trzebież, where almost everyone has a relative working in the fishing industry.
My first thought was to open a store in Trzebież and to transport fish deep into the country. I could not find an appropriate location, though. When traveling by car, I noticed a banner advertising an outlet in Dołuje, she recalls. I needed to paint the walls and buy the necessary equipment (which cost ca. PLN 30 thousand). All I had to do next was order the products and start selling them. The owner has one assistant.
At present, Gold Fish is visited most frequently by Dobra commune residents as well as additional clients from Germany. However, Natasza Cimochowska hopes to see shoppers also from the center of Szczecin. It’s not that far and my offering of fish is really unique. I make a real effort to ensure a wider range of exceptional products.
To attract more clients, the store has launched its own website and a Facebook profile. Additionally, the owner uses leaflets and banners to advertise its business.
Gold Fish is also planning to sell fried fish which clients can eat in and outside the store, where tables have already been arranged.
I will also apply for funds from the Local Employment Office to create a new job, buy a cooler van and hire a driver. This way I will be able to deliver fish directly to clients, says Natasza Cimochowska.
The fish store owner is not discouraged by formalities or the need to oversee the business on a daily basis.
All I have to do is to comfort those who are worrying about me and keep warning me against running my own business, says Natasza when asked about the difficulties encountered by a young entrepreneur.
