PŻM has won a contract for four new ships
Polska Żegluga Morska has signed a new USD 100 million investment contract to build four (and optionally two more) bulk carrier ships of 36.500 DWT each. The ships are intended for use on American Great Lakes.

The lakers will be constructed by Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Co. shipyard in Jiangyin City (China). Before, Polish shipyards were asked about the possibility to build this type of ships, but they expressed no interest in the contract. The contractual commissioning deadline falls in 2017, and the construction of the four bulk carriers will cost about USD 100 million.
Recently, Polska Żegluga Morska has implemented an investment plan for 2015-2020. So far, contracts for the construction of twelve 39,000 DWT bulk carriers at Yangfan Group Co. Ltd shipyard in Zhoushan City (China) have been concluded under the plan, based on a design prepared by Deltamarin, a recognized Finnish engineering firm. The first one shall be commissioned in November 2015.
In total (i.e. including the Yangzijiang ships), in 2015-2017 PŻM shall commission sixteen bulk carriers with the total tonnage of 614 DWT Two crews will take shifts on each vessel. Therefore, they will provide jobs for the total of 600 Polish seamen.
The recent investment contract for the construction of lakers is a component of PŻM strategy to maintain its strong position on the Great Lakes market, being a major water transport corridor for bulk goods in the U.S. and Canada. In cooperation with a major Canadian ship owner, PŻM holds a leading position in this market as a provider of ocean vessels. Ships owned by PŻM transport steel from Ijmuiden to Great Lakes and cereals on their way back to Europe.
