BPO sector in Szczecin pools resources to fight for their employees
11 companies that employ 3 thousand staff have decided to set up the West Pomeranian Association of Modern Business (WAMB)
The Association of enterprises operating in the scope of business process outsourcing and shared services is currently being registered and companies such as Arvato, BL Stream, brightOne, Coloplast, Metro Services, DGS, Stream/Convergys, Tieto, Unicredit, Unizeto and Dansk Supermarked are among its members.
“First of all, we want to show young people that it is worthwhile to stay on in Szczecin, or even to come from other towns to settle here, because of the gook work opportunities and future prospects.” – explains the chairman of the Association. “Nonetheless, in order to build the city’s reputation, strong arguments are needed in the form of recognised global companies domiciled here. For that reason we want to attract new investors who will join us in Szczecin.” – says Kamil Pilarski, the chairman of WAMB, Country Facility and Procurement Manager Tieto Poland.
“We are looking for a synergy effect, for instance by our joint participation in meetings with students. We are also planning to support foreign language learning - for example, we promote creation of new language faculties at the University of Szczecin.” - says Maciej Prusinowski, WAMB management board member, CFO in DGS Poland.
“At present, an insufficient number of job applicants seems the most serious threat for our sector.” Still, the city authorities appear interested in assisting us with remedying the situation in this respect – our outdoor campaign entitled “Good place to live and work” is the fruit of that cooperation. We are currently in the process of developing other similar projects in collaboration with the Marshal’s Office to promote our region among investors.” - adds Kamil Pilarski.
The name: West Pomeranian Association of Modern Business is derived from the business parlance which calls BPO/SSC modern services. The rationale behind BPO/SSC is to entrust business supporting functions, such as IT, HR (but also marketing, supply chain, quality management, legal services, management of infrastructure – buildings, car fleets, customer and supplier support, etc.) to specialized service providers.
“The idea came from bottom up a year ago, during a meeting of the heads of the HR departments of several companies from our sector. They initially planned to organize several promotional campaigns. When the work was well under way we decided that, like in Cracow, Wrocław and in other cities, we might as well give our activities a legalized form, formulate the general objectives, structure and grounds." - rounds up the chairman of WAMB.
According to the data supplied by the municipal authorities, 17 BPO/SSC companies operate in Szczecin and the vicinity, and they employ circa 3.5 – 3.8 thousand persons. BPO/SSC companies declare that within a year or two they intend to hire a thousand of new employees.
