Start! Corporate gadgets

Przemysław Ryder, a former manager of a steel recycling company and employee of an advertising agency, has decided to produce promotional materials.

One of his first important orders was to make printed sports t-shirts for the participants of the marathon - Maraton Puszczy Goleniowskiej - organized by ProGDar. He has also managed to attract other companies from the seafaring, chemical, building construction and manufacturing sectors. Przemysław Ryder primarily addresses his offer to large enterprises - several companies of this kind have already become his regular customers.

Przemysław Ryder’s establishment - PR Studio - has been operational since August this year. It mainly offers gadgets with company’s logos – the logos can be engraved, printed or embossed. Przemysław Ryder also uses dye sublimation printing.
“Dye sublimation, when used for T-shirt printing, is very durable, full-colour and soft to the touch,” he explains.  The method can be used even for small orders (beginning from 1 T-shirt) , because there are no preparation costs which must be incurred for instance in the case of screen printing.

He set up his company with the help of a loan furnished by the Polish Entrepreneurs Foundation (KLON foundation for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises). He spent those funds on the necessary underlying technologies and infrastructure, i.e. the purchase of the required machinery (dye sublimation printer, thermal press, plotter), office equipment, a graphic design programme, furnishings and other goods.

For the time being, he has been working alone. A graduate of the faculty of management and marketing at the University of Szczecin, he is not only the owner but also the procurement officer, trader and sometimes a printer and a graphic designer. Some of the orders are filled in cooperation with printing houses from Szczecin and Gdańsk.

He goes to business meetings with… a suitcase. “The suitcase itself is a gadget.  Inside I keep novelties and latest promotional gimmicks.  I make a presentation for the customer to show what direction the designers are currently heading in.  Customers often take the initiative and contact me first when they need something. Irrespective of that, I need to visit all my customers at least two or three times a year to show them the latest trends and provide them with catalogues that we work on for the whole year,” he adds.

He believes that the ability to sell yourself and gain the customer’s trust are the main ingredients of the recipe for success in the advertising business. Direct, face-to-face interaction is most effective for him.  At the same time, he admits that some customers are hard to persuade.

From the perspective of a new entrant into the advertising market it is difficult to quote prices that would be competitive with those offered by well-established companies.

“To make my offer attractive, I am forced to apply low margins,” he admits. He describes the level of competition in Szczecin as moderate, because there are only a few significant rivals.

In the nearest future he plans to start cooperating with more companies on the local and national market, and he wants to gain British and Swedish customers. He hopes to accomplish his plans with some help – he has hired an assistant who is currently undergoing the appropriate training.

An online store that will soon open is sure to become the second pillar of PR Sudio’s business activity. “I intend to hand out mugs and T-shirts with photos or designs prepared by the customer,” he promises.

In the long term, Przemysław Ryder is planning to include latex printing into the offer.  “It would be best if I could finance the purchase of specialized machinery from EU funds dedicated to development and improvement of business competitive power.  I hope that certain funds will be earmarked for those purposes in the future,” he concludes.
