Pekao Szczecin Open 2015 just begun
Nicolas Almagro from Spain is the star on the tennis court and American Tim Mitchell will take the festival stage of Challenger ATP.
Challenger ATP opens on 12 September with qualifying games ahead of the tournament proper which is set to begin on 14 September. Who is going to appear on the tennis courts at al. Wojska Polskiego this year?
The 30-year old Nicolas Almagro is an experienced player who has won lots of titles to his name. During his long career he has won 12 ATP 500 tournaments and earned a total of USD 10 million. At the peak of his career he achieved singles ranking of World No. 9. From 2010 he was in the TOP 20 for four consecutive years.
His sharp drop in the ranking in the last season was due to an injury. In Szczecin, the Spaniard will not only try to climb back up the rankings (a victory in the Pekao Szczecin Open tournament could earn him 125 points) but also reverse the bad luck that has haunted him since the beginning of his career.
Almagro will not be the only one trying to do that on the tennis court in Szczecin. The contenders will include Pablo Carreno Busta, Inigo Cervantes and Albert Montane, also representing the Iberian Peninsula.
On the court we shall also see Robin Haase, Filip Krajinovic and last year’s runner-up Jan-Lennard Struff. The Polish contingent will consist of Kamil Majchrzak and Paweł Ciaś who have received wildcards to the main tournament.
We should expect to see more Poles in the qualifying stage which starts on Saturday.
As the tournament tradition goes, a competition for VIPs, journalists and children will be held in addition to the main tournament.
Pekao Szczecin Open also stands for the Tennis Music Festival. The opening act on 14 September will be Siergiej Wowkotrub’s Gypsy Swing Quartet. On Tuesday, the audience will be charmed by the delightful voice of Lora Szafran. On Wednesday, they will listed to the one and only folk band Beltaine. On Thursday. the band Pustki will take the stage.
Friday will be a good opportunity to take a break from live music and enjoy the tournament banquet instead. Saturday, the final evening of the 2015 Tennis Music Festival will belong to the American artist Tim Mitchell. The musician will be accompanied by the outstanding Polish guitarist and blues singer Leszek Cichoński and his band.
