Flights to Düsseldorf in Spring

Flights from Szczecin to Weeze (airport 80 km away from Düsseldorf) will start on 31 March and will be available twice a week: on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Tickets may be already booked. The price of a one-way ticket starts at PLN 59.

“We chose a city on the west of Germany, near the border with the Netherlands, hoping that the new connection will be used not only by Poles and Germans, but also by the Dutch who will find it much easier to get to the region,” says Laszlo Tamas, Sales and Marketing Manager at Ryanair.

He fears, however, that cheap flights may be stopped by the Polish government.

“Poland has one of the highest PANSA fees in Europe (air navigation charge - ed.),” says Mr. Tamas. In the Western countries the fee is slightly above EUR 140. In Poland it is already EUR 282 and a 70 percent increase has been announced for the next year - to EUR 480. If this happens, we should not expect that new connections are launched.

The Goleniów airport has now three large investments. They include development of a new watchtower and a rescue and fire-fighting facility, modernization of the manoeuvring area and replacement of the air maintenance and security control equipment. Half of the money comes from the EU funds.

“Ryanair is a very good partner which, as one of the few, wants to listen to our comments and guidelines. However, if we want to expand our cooperation, in the first place we need to see to the development of the airport,” says Maciej Jarmusz, the Chairman of the Szczecin Goleniów Airport.

Ryanair is one of the largest carriers in Europe. It entered the Polish market in 2005 and now flies from nine airports. The company’s representative says that this year in Poland the airlines had 3 million passengers on 68 routes. In Europe, the number of passengers will amount to 66 million. Flights from the Szczecin-Goleniów Airport go to London and Dublin and take approx. 135 thousand of passengers a year.
