The fact that the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture otherwise known as Mies van der Rohe Award has been given to the Philharmonic Hall of Szczecin constitutes yet another proof that investing in unusual architecture is worthwhile.

The decision to grant the Mies van der Rohe Award to Mieczysław Karłowicz’s Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin was announced on 08 May 2015 in Barcelona. 40 other buildings were considered for the award.

The Mies van der Rohe Award is an architectural equivalent of the Nobel Prize. It is granted every two years by the European Commission and Mies van der Rohe Foundation. The Award draws attention to the major contribution by European professionals to the development of new ideas and technologies.

Designed by architects from the Barcelonan Barozzi Veiga studio, the ice-like shape of the Philharmonic Hall’s building has been recognized and widely complimented even since the first stages of the works. Now it has been hailed the new icon of the city. Experts praise the high standards of workmanship, its unique atmosphere and artistry, and the fact that the building has won the first prize in an international architectural competition confirms that these compliments are not exaggerated.

The construction of the new Philharmonic hall, which started in March 2011 and was completed in September 2014, cost PLN 95 million, 45 million of which was derived from the Regional Operational Programme. The interior hides more than 12,000 square metres of space in four storeys, which include: a symphonic hall, a chamber hall, rehearsal halls, music shop, cafe, spacious foyer, artists’ dressing rooms, storage rooms for instruments and offices. Every day the white facade of the Philharmonic hall may light up in hundreds of colours in various compositions. As from the first season (2014/2015) the Hall has been the hub of the broadly understood business and cultural life.
