Start! A bent for wood and more
Anna Malinowska-Łukasiak calls herself a designer-artisan. Her dream about running a carpenter’s shop started evolving ten years ago, when she met her future husband during an open-air sculptors’ workshop.
The history of the company Projekt Cacko can be seen as a true love story. “When I met Przemek we were working on the same chunk of wood. We began to make plans, also plans about owning a workshop together,” recollects Anna Malinowska-Łukasiak. “The secondary school of fine arts which we both attended have kindled our interest in old carpenter’s techniques and wood, whereas our studies in design have inspired us to love beautiful forms,” she adds. Anna Malinowska-Łukasiak and her husband gained the necessary experience and carpentry skills during their studies and employment with one of the largest design firms in Poland.
Projekt Cacko was launched in June 2015 with the help of a EU subsidy, the cash collected during the wedding and the work of the entire family which was actively involved in the redecoration of the space to be used as the carpenter’s shop. The workshop was arranged in a house, near Stargard - it took two years to get it ready. Then, Anna established the company, even though in practice it is run by both spouses.
Anna Malinowska-Łukasiak and her husband fashion furniture, candlesticks, serving trays, boards and other decorative articles from ash and oak. They design them themselves drawing inspiration from nature and what they see around them. “Our products are destined to become part of the living space. Each item is numbered and catalogued,’ she adds. Anna and her husband also make pictures which are then transferred to paper bags or framed and sold with the rest of their creations in their own online store: projektcacko.pl and through other sales platforms, such as DaWanda.
The owners of Projekt Cacko buy materials from small family companies. They entrust preparation of steel elements to local workshops. “We do our best to steer away from large production facilities and mass production - we are aware that this practice might increase the prices of our products, but we know that at the same time, it makes them special,” observes Anna Malinowska-Łukasiak.
“We have gone for broke. We spend a lot of time in the workshop, but such are the demands of this work – it is very difficult for a start-up to break into the market,” she adds. In her opinion, consistence and the faith in success are crucial.
How is business? “So far, so good – each prototype has already gained a new owner – hence, continuity is ensured,” she says gladly. Their customers find them through personal recommendations and they treat each satisfied buyer as an important achievement.
This year Anna Malinowska-Łukasiak and her husband will try to win new clientele through foreign sales platforms. They are also thinking about opening a brick-and-mortar store. “However, this will have to wait. We need to expand our business first. The immediate goals that we establish for ourselves need to be realistic,” she sums up.
