M Systems, which is the name of the businesses set up by the D.Sc.-to-be, provides advisory, analytical and coordination services to construction projects. Interestingly, it works in hydro-technical construction which is a niche market.

Przemysław Makiewicz owes his choice of the business line to his father Mariusz with his 30+ year experience in the construction industry (his father was a foreman and ran his own project management office). Przemysław started his firm in 2014 using his own savings, mainly proceeds from awards for his academic work.

“I’d always wanted to work in law and administration. I gained some hands-on experience undertaking various organisational and administrative tasks at the university. Those jobs taught me how to run my own business. I don’t have the necessary qualifications to work as an architect myself, so as far as technical aspects are concerned, I have to rely on a team of experienced engineers that I work with”, says Przemysław Makiewicz who is mainly in charge of the legal and administrative side of business in his firm.

Currently, M Systems is carrying out three long-term assignments. They all comprise the full investment cycle and are divided into three stages each – the concept, construction and execution. Each stage takes a few months to complete.

The first assignment involves hydro technical work for POC Partners from Belgium which has started building the Marina Royale development consisting of three apartment blocks situated directly on the coast in Darłowo. Another business partner is the international corporation URS – AECOM. M Systems is in charge of preparing the design documentation of expansion of the Oliwskie Quay and deepening of the inland waterways in the Port of Gdansk.

The owner of M Systems regards his firm’s capability to carry out large-scale projects as a big asset, although the long payment terms offered by such big clients, i.e. after completion of a project, can be a problem for the company.

“You have to engage you own personal connections if you want to win new contracts”, admits the owner of M Systems. For marketing reasons he supports the company RCIiTT which has its office just around the corner in Jagiellońska Street.

Przemysław Makiewicz plans on putting all the proceeds from the contracts in business development into his firm. “When I first started the business, I bought some basic tools and CAD software for making blueprints and calculations software. I’m going to buy some simulation software for running analyses and optimisation used in construction design”, he says.
